I'd of course heard their music before, but I really wasn't aware of them as a group so I never gave them any real attention. I'm really digging what I'm hearing. I like the new wave style and all the musical influences the band added to their compositions. There is quite a bit of stuff from the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s that influenced their music. Its nice to hear people who can synthesize their influences into their own musical style. A musician should be able to take into themselves the music of others and mix that with their own life experiences and personalities to create something new. Thats how the really interesting music is made.

MONTREAL — A Canadian art project involving a giant banana, helium and the state of Texas was already considered bold and controversial. Now there are doubts about whether the massive piece of fruit will ever fly.

Despite getting about $105,000 from Quebec and federal art-funding agencies, Canadian artist Cesar Saez's flying-banana project appears to be meeting turbulence. According to his project's webpage, the "Geostationary Banana Over Texas" has failed to get enough grassroots funding to ensure its planned launch date in August.

That is when Saez has said he would release a 984-foot banana, about the size of three football fields, over the Mexican desert and see it drift over the Lone Star state.

When he was promoting the idea in January last year, Saez said the blimp-like banana was a statement about advertising, sex, politics and illegal migration from Mexico into the United States.

"Why not a banana over Texas?" the contemporary artist based in Montreal asked The Globe and Mail at the time.

He dodged questions about whether the entire enterprise was a hoax.

The Canada Council for the Arts took the project seriously enough to award the artist $95,000; a spokesman praised the banana project as "a work of public art" in which the artist uses "the sky as his venue rather than a park or street corner."

But now a link from the project's website -- geostationarybananaovertexas.com -- says it has collected only 1 percent of the $1.5 million required to get the banana airborne. By June 15 of this year, the project's own cutoff date, it had raised only $12,018.

And on June 17, a more ominous message appeared there: "Campaign closed in failure."

The Canada Council now says that maybe the notion of using the sky as an artistic venue wasn't the point after all.

"We fund research, and we hope it will literally get off the ground, in this case," Pierre Arpin, head of Visual Arts at the Canada Council, said from Ottawa Monday. "But this was an exploration project to assist an artist in defining how he can get a certain body of work created.

"People can think it's a hoax," Arpin continued, "but artists have been doing a lot of interesting things that a lot of people haven't been able to follow. (Saez) is pushing the boundaries and letting people think outside the box -- or the fruit basket."

The artist is required to submit an interim report to the federal agency by February before being eligible for another $40,000 in promised funding. At that point, the agency will weigh whether the artist will "be able to succeed in his original plan," Arpin said.

A spokesman for Conseil Des Arts et Des Lettres du Quibec wouldn't comment on the banana project and referred all questions to the artist. The council has granted Mr. Saez about $50,000 over two years, in addition to $5,000 in travel costs.

The spokesman said the funding was for research and creative work.

Saez did not respond to messages Monday.

Woman accidentally stabs herself in cemetery ritual

A Boone County woman accidentally stabbed herself in the foot with a 36-inch sword used in a Wiccan ceremony in a Lebanon cemetery, police said.

According to a Lebanon Police Department news release, Katherine Gunther, 36, was performing a Wiccan "ceremony of thanks" in Oak Hill Cemetery around 12:15 a.m. Saturday when she ran the blade through her left foot. She said in an interview Monday that she'd had a run of good luck recently and wanted to give thanks with the rite.

Gunther said she was aiming to put a sword in the ground when it accidentally hit her foot.

"It wasn't the first time I performed the ritual, but it was the first time I put a sword through my foot," she said...

'Body Of Christ' Snatched From Church, Held Hostage By UCF Student

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- A University of Central Florida student, upset religious groups hold church services on public campuses, is holding hostage the Eucharist, an object so sacred to Catholics they call it the Body of Christ.

Church officials say UCF Student Senator Webster Cook was disruptive and disrespectful when he attended Mass held on campus Sunday June 29. It was during that Mass where Cook admits he obtained the Eucharist.

The Eucharist is a small bread wafer blessed by a priest. According to Catholics, the wafer becomes the Body of Christ once blessed and is to be consumed immediately after a minister passes it out to churchgoers.

Cook claims he planned to consume it, but first wanted to show it to a fellow student senator he brought to Mass who was curious about the Catholic faith.

"When I received the Eucharist, my intention was to bring it back to my seat to show him," Cook said. "I took about three steps from the woman distributing the Eucharist and someone grabbed the inside of my elbow and blocked the path in front of me. At that point I put it in my mouth so they'd leave me alone and I went back to my seat and I removed it from my mouth."

A church leader was watching, confronted Cook and tried to recover the sacred bread. Cook said she crossed the line and that's why he brought it home with him.

"She came up behind me, grabbed my wrist with her right hand, with her left hand grabbed my fingers and was trying to pry them open to get the Eucharist out of my hand," Cook said, adding she wouldn't immediately take her hands off him despite several requests.

Diocese of Orlando spokeswoman Carol Brinati said she was not aware of anyone touching Cook. She released a statement Thursday: "... a Catholic Campus Ministry student representative filed a complaint with the Student Union regarding the behavior of the two young men. A Student Government Representative called Catholic Campus Ministry to apologize for this disruption."

Cook filed an official abuse complaint with UCF's student conduct court regarding the alleged physical force. Following that complaint, Brinati said church members filed their own official complaints of disruptive conduct. Punishment for either offense could result in suspension or expulsion.

"The church feels that I'm the problem here," Cook said. "The problem is actually that this is a publicly-funded religious institution. Through student government here, we fund them through an activity and service, so they're receiving student money."

Cook is upset more than $40,000 in student fees have been allocated to support religious organizations on campus for the 2008-2009 school year, according to student government records. He denied he is holding the Eucharist hostage to protest that support.

Regardless of the reason, the Diocese says its main concern is to get the Eucharist back so it can be taken care of properly and with respect. Cook has been keeping the Eucharist stored in a plastic bag since last Sunday.

"It is hurtful," said Father Migeul Gonzalez with the Diocese. "Imagine if they kidnapped somebody and you make a plea for that individual to please return that loved one to the family."

Gonzalez said the Diocese is willing to meet with Cook and help him understand the importance of the Eucharist in hopes of him returning it. The Diocese is dispatching a nun to UCF's campus to oversee the next mass, protect the Eucharist and in hopes Cook will return it.

Cook said he'd consider returning the Eucharist if he gets an apology and a meeting with the Bishop's office to discuss the Diocese's policy on physical force.

Gonzalez said intentionally abusing the Eucharist is classified as a mortal sin in the Catholic church, the most severe possible. If it's not returned, the community of faith will have to ask for forgiveness.

"We have to make acts of reparation," Gonzalez said. "The whole community is going to turn to prayer. We'll ask the Lord for pardon, forgiveness, peace, not only for the whole community affected by it, but also for [Cook], we offer prayers for him as well."

NORWALK, Calif. (AP) -- A convenience store became an unwilling drive-in when a 74-year-old woman plowed her car through the front window and then tried to buy a six-pack of Budweiser, police and the owner said.

Lynne Rice of Norwalk drove her 1988 Cadillac into Joe's Food Mart and Video on Sunday evening, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Jenny Ha said.

The car plowed about halfway through the store but nobody was injured. Rice got out of the car, walked over to the cooler and pulled out a six-pack of Budweiser beer, said the store owner, who gave only his last name, Awada, to the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

"I don't know how she managed to walk," Awada said, adding a cashier declined the sale and instead called police.

Rice was taken to a hospital for examination because she had a pre-existing medical condition, Ha said.

She was also arrested for investigation of misdemeanor driving under the influence and released on $15,000 bail, authorities said.

Rice could not be reached for comment Tuesday. There was no telephone listing with her name in Norwalk.

Awada said the crash destroyed two 6-foot-wide glass panels. Damage was put at about $8,000.

Pike Place sucks and is probably hurting Starbucks

You know how Starbucks is planning on closing 600 stores? Many people are blaming the economy or are saying that they opened stores in places that couldn't support a store. There is probably something to those two things, but I think there is more going on. I don't think Starbucks really knows what kind of products can bring people into their stores. They've recently brought in this new coffee blend called Pike's Place. They want it to basically be their house blend and staple coffee. They apparently did quite a bit of research and held focus groups when creating it. Even after they released it, it seemed to always be different. I remember when it first came out, it tasted like oily burnt smoke, which was pretty nasty. They've made some improvements to it, but it still sucks. Many Starbucks lovers like myself are put off by their decision to implement this crappy coffee. I'm mad I can't go there in the evenings or afternoon and get a nice Venti cup of Sumatra or Gazebo blend. I can't prove it, but I think this new blend might actually be causing them to lose customers. If they had better leadership they'd be able to bring in better products to bring in more customers. They wouldn't have brought in a shitty new blend that more or less takes over a customers choice in coffee. It'll be interesting to see if Starbucks gives up on their new Pike Place blend.

How being brainy 'can add 15 years to your life'

It gets you good grades at school, improves your prospects at work and makes you more attractive to the opposite sex. And as if all that weren't enough, being brainy could add 15 years to your life, a study suggests. Researchers found those with rogue copies of a gene linked to intelligence are unlikely to survive beyond the age of 85. However, those blessed with good versions of the gene could live to be 100.

The gene governs an enzyme which destroys a chemical known to dampen brain activity and cause drowsiness. The enzyme - succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase, or SSADH - also detoxifies the brain by getting rid of excess acid, protecting cells from damage which can accelerate ageing. The gene comes in two common forms, with the so-called 'T' version working 20 per cent less well than the 'C' variety. Previous studies have shown that men and women with two copies of the 'T' version do less well in IQ tests than others. But only now have scientists made the link to life expectancy, this week's New Scientist reports.

The Italian researchers based their findings on a study of 115 elderly men and women. They were asked to complete a test of memory and mental dexterity more usually used to diagnose Alzheimer's disease. The volunteers, who were aged between 65 and 85, had given blood samples to determine which version of the gene they were carrying. Those carrying two copies of the rogue 'T' version of the gene performed significantly worse than the others, echoing the results of the earlier research on young people.

The University of Calabria researchers then used data on how common the versions of the gene were across different age ranges to work out if it was linked with longevity. This showed those carrying two 'T' variants were unlikely to live past 85 - but those with at least one 'C' could expect to live to up to 100. The scientists said that having a double dose of the rogue gene appeared to make people more vulnerable to mental decline in old age, as well as affecting their survival. But they stressed that genes do not tell the whole story.

Professor Giuseppe Passarino said: 'There's no doubt lifestyle such as reading, having challenging work and enriching your cultural life is far more important than having the bad variant.'

Professor Robert Plomin, of the Institute of Psychiatry in London, who in 2004 linked the gene to IQ, said: 'Although the sample size is small...the reported associations with cognitive ability are significant and in line with our previous results.' He added that further studies were needed to confirm the link with longevity.

In the GIANT tank, with Whale Sharks!!! The Georgia Aquarium, and their large tank is absolutely phenomenal. It's is ridiculously large, and is stuffed full of all kinds of cool fish and animals. Big schools of rays, smaller sharks, whale sharks, and tons of fish. It is hard to understand just how big the Georgia Aquarium is. Those whale sharks are basically the same size as whales (duh), but the tank is so big that you often cannot see them, and have to wait for them to come around again. o_O

Its kinda hard to believe they are letting people dive into it, even in tightly controlled small groups of 6 divers per day. Even more amazing is that its only $290 to swim with whale sharks! Oh hell yeah!!!!!!!

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- It might have been the setting for a "Jaws" movie.

Six snorkelers wading like ducks in a row, cruising just below the surface of the water while watching exotic fish dart beneath them. It was all very peaceful, until the mysterious whale shark appeared out of the deep blue.

The whale shark is one of the most perplexing and elusive creatures in the ocean, still largely a mystery even to the marine biologists who have dedicated careers to studying the creatures.

But here, in the confines of the Georgia Aquarium in downtown Atlanta, it's impossible not to see the giant whale sharks -- particularly when you're in the middle of their fish tank.

It's also somewhat hard to avoid them: The creatures seemed more intrigued by the visitors, often lumbering toward them like a slow, curious locomotive.

The guests were circling the world's largest fish tank through the aquarium's "Swim with Gentle Giants" program, which plucks six snorkelers and six divers into the 6.3-million gallon fish tank each day.

The visitors are treated to close-up encounters of roving bands of sting rays, sleek hammerhead sharks, enormous grouper and countless other species. But the puzzling whale sharks were the real draw -- and for good reason.

The aquarium is the only outside Asia to house the whale sharks, and the only in the world to offer tourists a chance to dive with the creatures.

The program's directors pitch it as an innovative and safe way to help visitors better understand animals they'd otherwise never see.

"An immersion experience is the ultimate way of connecting people and animals," said Bruce Carlson, the aquarium's chief science officer.

"It's a real opportunity for us to expand ways for people to get to know the animals here at the aquarium and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our visitors to see animals they'll probably never get a chance to see in the wild."

But the ambitious program has raised concerns from critics who worry that dangling legs and curious tourists could stress the habitat of the whale sharks and thousands of other animals that share the massive tank.

"There's a chance these animals can become stressed because of the increase in the amount of people in their environments," said Lori Marino, an Emory University biologist who studies whale biology. "Not only can it affect their physical health, but their mental health. And we don't know how much stress this puts on the animals or how they could respond."

The Georgia Aquarium is one of the few places that have ever attempted to house the creatures, and the only in the U.S.

So far their record is spotty: Two of the whale sharks have died since the aquarium opened in 2005. But the aquarium has invested in research projects on the whale shark in Mexico, Taiwan and Mexico. And the facility is quickly making a name for itself in the research community for its whale shark work, thanks to divers who have already logged thousands of hours feeding and studying the massive animals.

Carlson said he gave the go-ahead to the new program because the dives have so far had "no effect on the whale sharks' behavior."

"We're the experts on that, and we can make the judgment because we probably spend more time with whale sharks than anyone criticizing us," he said.

"Most people who have contact with them have probably had a minute-long experience in the ocean. You have to trust our judgment on that. We've gotten to understand their nature, and we feel quite confident that our presence is not affecting them."

In many ways, the aquarium is charting new waters. A handful of other facilities offer diving or snorkeling experiences in their tanks, but none offers a setting as expansive as the Georgia Aquarium's Ocean Voyager tank.

Along with the whale sharks, the salt-water exhibit is home to thousands of other animals, including the largest collections of giant grouper, wobbegong sharks and a dozen other rare species.

The dive is far from a free-for-all. During a 15-minute briefing, guides stress a message of conservation and warn participants not to touch any fish while in the tanks. They then don wet suits, snorkels, masks and flippers before plopping into the salty water.

The snorkelers are forced to stay in a rigid line during the swim, kept in toe by dive guides and staffers armed with underwater cameras to document their journey.

It's not a cheap trip, costing $190 for snorkelers and $290 for scuba divers. But the aquarium has so far been encouraged by the response. Aquarium spokesman Dave Santucci said some 1,500 have signed up for the program before its June 8 start.

Krista Massey, an aquarium member who previewed the program, said she felt unnerved when she dipped into the water.

"You know, there's hammerhead sharks in there," she said. "There's all kinds of predators you've been scared of all your life, and all the sudden, you're in their world."

It didn't take long, though, for her to feel more comfortable in the tank -- and the experience gave her a deeper sense of wonder for the creatures floating around them.

"What you learn through the process is so much more than what most people know about these animals, and it teaches you a different type of appreciation," she said.

Under the placid surface, too many fish to name swarm below, exotic creatures like zebra sharks, cownose rays and guitar fish. A group of glimmering Golden trevally shimmer around one bend. Not far from there, Grumpy the Grouper, a local icon, glowered near a window.

And of course, there were the four whale sharks, massive beasts that barreled around the tank as they wished, sailing agonizingly close to the awed visitors.

As the 30-minute experience neared its end and the six lined up to depart the cage, the silence underwater was suddenly broken by a warning from a guide.

"Stay flat," she yelled. "Feet up."

Then, a current rippled through the water. And the gentle giant swam by once more.

They found a sixth foot!

They need to stop pussyfooting about and to kick the investigation into high gear! They are acting like first-year gumshoes!

They have six feet- yet they cannot fathom if the cases are connected? I understand that they have to tread lightly when they address the press, but fear of ending up with a foot in your mouth doesn't excuse anything. It certainly doesn't excuse them dancing around in circles like they are doing.

Judging from their leanings, it appears the investigators will botch up the investigation so badly the resulting court case won't have a leg to stand on.

"Now, it is clear that the right thing to do is to listen to my doctors, follow through with this surgery and focus my attention on rehabilitating my knee," Woods said on his Web site.

He sure wasn't listening to doctors by playing the U.S. Open, a victory that now looks even more impressive.

It was in many ways a defining moment in my life because it was something that really set in motion my computer obsession. It took me from being a video game nerd who wanted to be a video game programmer. Into someone who REALLY FREAKING wanted to become a video game programmer. I no longer care about programing or even being a part of the computer industry, but my love of computers is still with me. I've been watching online videos of the LA Riots from the early 90s. Its kinda freaky and insane to watch. That kind of chaos is rare in America. It just doesn't happen much. I find it interesting that the businesses that survived the riots were owned by Koreans. They were armed to the teeth and didn't hesitate to protect their businesses by shooting people. From what I understand, most of the Korean men who owned or worked at the businesses were veterans of the Korean armed forces. I've always been told by guys who were stationed in Korea that that the Koreans are bad asses. They always say it with a tinge of fear because from what I'm told. Koreans are very good at embracing the hate.....Not on my top 10 list of groups to fuck with......Not that I would seeing as they are always so nice in my experience.

The Smoke

Ok, this smoke is getting unbelievably bad. It's been covering the whole city like a thick blanket for several days now. I couldn't sleep last night because all the smoke got into the house and made my skin feel like it was on fire. I was also fighting the need to vomit from all the smoke. :/

When I got to work I had to deal with smoke that was much thicker then it is here on the south side. The thickness of it all was almost too much. I kept trying to hack up stuff into trash cans at work. It kind of worried some of the other employees. :/

The weather forecasts are saying that the winds are going to change direction and clear up almost all of the smoke today. I can't freaking wait. :/

We have all heard about Global Warming and how devastating it's effects are to our environment, but Global Warming isn't the only environmental threat of our generation.

"Hell Warming" is a documented phenomenon that has scientists all of the world extremely concerned. Apparently there has been a unprecedented amount of fuel being added to the fires of hell thereby warming it up to temperatures higher than ever before. Just how hot can hell get? What will happen if Hell gets too hot? Is there anything we can do to slow down Hell Warming? All of these questions and more will be discussed at the first annual "Hell Warming" global summit to be held in Finland's capital city this summer. The summit entitled Hell Is Getting Hotter, or "HIGH" is expecting world wide media attention and thousands of attendees.

Self proclaimed Hell expert and lake of fire biologist Hienrich Sminggee stated.... "there is just too many souls being thrown on to the fires of hell.... the rate of combustible fuel being transported to hell each year is at an all time high and something must be done before its too late."

Interestingly enough unlike global warming which is predominately blamed on capitalism and conservatives "Hell Warming" is being blamed on primarily on liberalism. Apparently liberalism, secular humanism, the gay rights movement, pro-choice advocates and other left wing advocacy groups are having a noticeable effect on the overall "condemned souls" to "saved souls" ratio on planet earth. It seems the numbers of condemned and therefore hell-bound souls have dramatically increased over the past few years and it is having a measurable effect on the overall temperature in hell. It is this rise in temperature "hell warming" that is causing such concern among scientists world-wide. Some have even speculated that Global Warming itself is simply a side-effect of Hell warming.

When asked what might happen if the rate of fuel being sent to hell doesn't slow-down or stabilize within the next hundred years or so, one anonymous scientist said.... "I don't know, it's impossible to say at this point. Maybe all hell will break lose?"

It isn't clear if the global summit on hell warming will include a request for more government funded research into the problem of hell warming or if the conference will be simply be a way to bring concerned scientists together for future planning on the issue. "It isn't our intention to scare the world about hell warming, we aren't going to be preaching 'fire and brimstone', errrr.... well maybe we are, in a way.... I guess. Nevermind" stated Blem Targ a renowned scientists from in institute of W.H.D.H. (Why is Hell so Damned Hot?)

There was a time when folks jokingly stated that hell might freeze over! Those phrases have now melted in the heat of this dramatic and emerging crisis.

Family matters

Last week my Aunt Cindy fell and broke her arms. It was an EXTREMELY bad fall. FARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR worse then anything I could have imagined. Her wrists and elbows were mostly shattered. It was bad enough the bones were broken, but the cartilage was shattered and destroyed. The most the surgeons have been able to do is just kind of wire everything back together. :/

Our family has been told she'll probably never be able to take care of herself after this. Her arms are that screwed up. :/ My mom is saying that she'll probably end up moving to Florida and living with us. Which, I suppose is fine seeing as we have an extra room and all.

I'm not sure how we'll cope with having to take care of her. I've never had to face the thought of taking care of a disabled family member before all of this happened. Maybe that isn't entirely correct... I have thought about the need to take care of my mom in old age. Thats about it though.

It'll probably be weeks before we have any idea about whats going to be happening. If she does come to live here. I could probably put her on my insurance from my corporation. Sherry, one of the girls I work with put her mom (who is disabled) on her insurance for very little money. I should ask her about that tomorrow.

Today, Maggie told me that she heard that Rush tickets were insanely priced and what not. She quoted me some downright INSANE prices that made me question the source of her information. The main red flag for me was that she said lawn seats are 75 dollars.

Lawns seats at most sheds are 32ish because they are there to bring in the people without much cash.... Like my friends.... Who'll probably have trouble paying for tickets. -_-'

After our conversation. I headed over to the Ticketmaster website to look at prices and seats. The cheap seats are 32ish plus the service charges that TM has. So it's like 40ish+7%tax. I was right about the prices!!! Everything else was priced exactly as I expected it to be too. Which is fine by me because I'm getting one of the more expensive seats as usual. I'm not siting on the grass. I'm getting a chair in the shed. because I know how rainy it gets in Tampa. After all, I used to live there. If my friends get wet... Well, thats their problem.

It's going to be a pain in the butt to even try to pull off seeing Rush this year. I'll have to use vacation days on Friday and Saturday to skip work and be at school for testing. After the testing is done on Saturday at 1pmish. I'll have to drive straight from FCCJ to Tampa to see the show. It's slightly over 200 miles so it should take about three and a half hours to get to Tampa. The show will probably start at about 7ish so I should have plenty of time to get down there. Ben's mom called me at 1:19 in the freaking morning right as I hit REM. I was pissed when I found out all she wanted to know was where is Ben.... Telling the world about this might make me seem sick. I've not slept for days because I keep thinking about investing consistently. I keep going over the math in my head and it's driving me nuts. Why is it driving me nuts? It's because I'm not maxing out my Roth IRA this year! I've ALWAYS maxed that sucker out! Grrrr... *bashes head against wall*

I kind of wish I worked more last year just because I'd have maxed it out by now. It's my own fault... I chose to spend more time relaxing and hanging out with friends. I worked myself to the bone for too long. :/ I have a much more adult and healthy perspective on life now.

Next year, the maximum for IRAs should go up to $5,000 soooo I guess that will help me in this odd way catch up. I should really feel good about all of this. It's not like the maximum contribution is still stuck at a few grand anymore. There is clearly an upward trend in contribution limits since people keep pushing for the ability to invest more.

Although, I am still obsessing over this. It's really really freaking amazing at the milestone my portfolio has reached. It's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much larger then what most anybody my age has. Most young people don't want to worry about anything, but the here and now. They don't want to save money. They don't want to provide for their own health insurance. They don't want to invest for retirement. They want their drugs, meaningless sex, and bling. :/ I'm doing sooo much better then I give myself credit for. I'm doing what I can to become healthy, wealthy and wise. :/

LONDON - Keith Richards has acknowledged consuming a raft of illegal substances in his time, but this may top them all.

In comments published Tuesday, the 63-year-old Rolling Stones guitarist said he had snorted his father’s ashes mixed with cocaine.

“The strangest thing I’ve tried to snort? My father. I snorted my father,” Richards was quoted as saying by British music magazine NME.

Rush is playing the West Palm Beach Sound Advice Amphitheater on June 15th. *MASSIVE HUGE GRIN* I am definitely going to go to this show and I will bring my friends. I love the vibe of the venue and the city down there. I had a total blast when I saw Judas Priest and Queensryche. The people and a lot of music fans down there are really cool if not slightly insane.... It's on a Friday sooo I'll probably just plan to spend the weekend down there unless I decide see them the following day in Tampa. I'm not going to do the whole drive down there see a show and them come home the next day like I did in 2005. I don't get out of this boring massive city enough. :/

It's been said that the best things for depression are going to bed early and going to work the next day. I've been kind of ill for days and it's totally drained me. Soooooooo I'm going to bed early which will help me feel better when I go to work tomorrow.

Helicopter "Buzz Saw" Works

Trimming trees along power lines is a huge job. It can be done the hard way, with lift trucks and chain saws, or it can be done the easy way - with a 40-ft. long buzz saw bar that hangs from a helicopter.

Aerial Solutions, Tabor City, N.C., says its patented helicopter "buzz saw" can neatly square off any tree line. It consists of eleven 24-in. dia. circular saw blades attached to a 40-ft. long aluminum bar. The bar hooks to a steel cable suspended from the helicopter. The blades are belt-driven by a 45 hp, 2-cycle gas engine that mounts at one end of the bar. The blades spin at 5,800 rpm's. All operations are controlled by the pilot.

Malcolm Casner, who farms near Herrick, Ill., became fascinated with the cutting operation when it came to his area two years ago. The crew and helicopter were in the area for a week or so, clearing branches and top canopy growth along either side of local power lines. One day the crew asked if the helicopter and cutter rig could be parked in their pasture for the night. They granted permission.

Casner talked to the pilot, Kevin Gurley, and crew chief, Edwin Todd. They told him the company operates four such helicopters throughout the U.S The team works 30 days, then takes 30 days off. They cut four to six miles of power line right-of-way each day. A crew follows their path, cleaning up branches and debris. The 450 hp helicopter burns 35 gal. of fuel per hour. To conserve fuel, the helicopter is stripped of all nonessential equipment which allows the pilot to stay on the job for 50 minutes to an hour at a time.

The load limit at the hook of the helicopter is 2,000 lbs. The saw blade assembly weighs about 900 lbs. During cool fall and early winter days, when lift characteristics are at their peak, an additional four blades can be added to the assembly, adding another 200 lbs. to the load.
